<image:caption>This one was a bit of a Franken-alloy, I melted a lot of leftover material from other gold projects as well as a large amount of fine silver to create this piece. The final tally ended up being approximately 9k.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wrought Iron</image:title>
<image:caption>A piece inspired by the Maori matau, a type of fishing lure that looks for all the world like a fish hook, doesn't actually hook anything, but still catches fish all the same. This piece would be a poor tool, but I think it will make a fine necklace pendant.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wrought Iron</image:title>
<image:caption>A small tsuba made as part of a comprehensive build, this is meant to be mounted on a small sword but I think I prefer it on its own. Much of the texture on the face of the piece is simply the structure of the material itself, I did my best to add a little without getting in the way. The little snail friend in the corner is an inlay - the shell is carved mild steel, and the body is carved and textured fine silver.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wrought Iron</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was inspired by the seemingly ubiquitous jade and stone discs found in ancient China. There are quite a few examples in museums of wonderfully shaped and polished discs with no known "use". I feel the use is far less important than the satisfaction that comes from handling it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wrought Iron</image:title>
<image:caption>This side features a recently sprouted set of poison ivy leaves. I wanted to convey a sense of folding downwards and a subdued feeling. The sword this belongs to has an early spring night theme, and the concept of life finally stirring and ready to flourish but still laboring under the weight of the previous season appealed to me. The leaves are mild steel, and the stem is a different variety of wrought iron from the base.</image:caption>

<image:title>Steel</image:title>
<image:caption>Probably my favorite stage when doing pierced pieces like this. After all of the negative space has been defined, it's time to work on shapes that are not just parallel and perpendicular. It's this stage that transforms a piece from a flat, bland cutout into something with life and interest. Here I've just begun to round out the outline of one of three central holes that are an iconic element of many antique tsuba.</image:caption>

<image:title>Steel</image:title>

<image:caption>The lack of a good, sturdy workbench had been chafing me for quite a while, and this is the solution I came up with. I wanted something functional but not boring and utilitarian, and I feel like I succeeded.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Potential. This picture was taken immediately preceding carving with a katakiri chisel. There is a little preview into the design in the bottom left of the photo, I placed my copper practice plate down there to have as a reference during the final carving. This piece is made from shibuichi - this particular mix is 80% copper and 20% silver. Preparation of the surface before carving is essential with the sort of design this piece will have, both for layout purposes and for making the polishing job easier after carving is finished.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An early chased copper piece, this was made for a good friend of mine shortly after he lost a horse he had grown up with. He's also very into Viking themes, so I did my best to honor his name with runes - Bailey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>A small bronze pendant, this one about the size of a US quarter. I wanted to incorporate a lot of the design elements I've seen utilized on many antique tsuba, such as the distressed and polished rim, simple carving, and subtle textures.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>A progress shot of the pommel and guard plates after they've been cut out and had the edges filed. The parts ended up matching beautifully and I couldn't help but show off by having them stand together on end without any support. These were made from a copper-rich variety of brass, which reduces the typical bright yellow color of most brasses and lends it a lovely honey gold quality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>A gourd formed from 16ga copper sheet, this is an example of what can be done with uchidashi. it's often compared to chasing & repoussé, but I found it to be more akin to raising. The color on this piece is a result of controlled heating and quenching, it is not a patina.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the best examples of a successful pour, this piece was made by casting copper directly onto a cloth suspended in a pot of water. This technique is called Yuwake, and results in a beautifully oxide-free ingot, ready for forging.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>My first chased piece using bronze, this is actually a modern material that uses silicon as the alloying element rather than the usual tin. It's difficult to find this in sheet, so I took a piece of 1/2" round and forged it into the dimensions I needed. The design is a bust of Athena, made for a good friend who honors the Greek pantheon. The piece is "stitched" onto the leather barette with copper wire, and the pin is dyed curly maple.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A commissioned piece, this sleepy lion was the centerpiece on a gorget for a friend who is an accomplished fencer. It was chased in 18ga brass sheet, then soldered to the stainless steel base. There are more photos of the completed gorget in the Armour portion of the Iron & Steel gallery, but I felt this part of the piece deserved individual attention.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>A one piece copper habaki, this is one of the various fittings associated with Japanese swords. This piece is intended to sit just above the tsuba, or guard, and it interacts with the scabbard and helps align the blade within it. The patina was achieved with a traditional rokusho solution, and the picture does not do justice to the depth and richness of the color.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>A fun little raising project, this started out as a junky copper ashtray found at a thrift store. I think it's a fine piece as is, but it could easily become the cup portion of a goblet if I wanted to find a function for it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is a collaboration between Peter Swarz-Burt and myself, the project was to make a Chinese Dao with a pattern welded blade and decorative brass fittings. My portion of the work was to make the faces of the pommel and guard, as well as the decorative elements on them. Both pieces have a chiseled border, raised inlaid fine silver wire, and a linear texture to simulate rain. All other work done by Peter.</image:caption>

<image:title>Copper / Alloys</image:title>
<image:caption>Quite possibly my most popular piece to date. This one gets noticed when I wear it out, and it starts many conversations about how it was made. I had originally intended for this to be a pair, but found that I enjoy the asymmetrical feeling of just the one.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of many copper pieces made learning under Ford Hallam at Zack Jonas' shop in New Hampshire, I owe the entirety of my knowledge of traditional Japanese metalwork to Ford. This piece is from three days of focus on one particular chisel - the katakiri.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another katakiri design, this is based on an original sketch. The katakiri chisel was designed to be used in a way that mimics ink brushstrokes. This piece is a fairly rough representation, but I love the potential.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By far the largest bladed item I've ever forged. This commissioned piece was a full 45" long from point to pommel. The blade was made from 5160 and features a fuller running approximately two-thirds the length on both sides. The guard, handle spacer, pommel, and orienting block are all forged from mild steel. Both the design on the pommel and the text in the fullers were carved by me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I needed to come up with a way to integrate the legs with the rest of the design. I decided to mirror the splayed crease design here as well, but toned down a bit. This fan ensures coverage to the side of the knee regardless if the leg is straight or bent.</image:caption>

<image:title>Armour</image:title>
<image:caption>Probably my favorite detail on the suit, making the buckles that catch the shoulder straps was a joy. While not specifically modeled after a particular historical design, I tried to make it reminiscent of antique pieces.</image:caption>

<image:title>Armour</image:title>
<image:caption>A fierce shot of the bearer of the first full suit of armour I was commissioned to make. A fully custom suit with one foot in history and the other in fantasy, it needed not only to look the part but also be able to take a hit. The entire suit is made of stainless, and every inch was hammered to leave a distinctive pattern of marks and lend extra durability to the parts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Armour</image:title>
<image:caption>Part of a series of commissions made for a huge fan of an iconic piece of media many of us are familiar with, this helmet was a LOT of fun to make. The roughness of the surface and finish felt very freeing, but it did not absolve me of the task of shaping the piece well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Armour</image:title>
<image:caption>The only specifically righty shield I'm aware of, the customer wanted another could-be screen accurate piece to go with their other equipment. This is made from a 16ga sheet for the main body of the shield, with stout fangs made from 14ga mild.</image:caption>

<image:title>Armour</image:title>
<image:caption>A satisfying detail from the shield, these are the rivets that secure the protrusions at the business end of the shield. The goal here was to mimic a style that was very capable of producing good work, but was thoroughly unconcerned with decoration or neatness.</image:caption>
